Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir

Johanna Sigurdardottir, the world’s first openly gay prime minister, is to continue as pm after leading the Social Democrat party to victory in a snap election April 25th. Johanna was first appointed as the Iceland’s prime minister in February after a conservative-led government for 2 years failed.
Jóhanna has been member of Althingi (the Parliament) for the Reykjavík constituency since 1978. She was the minister of social affairs 1987-1994 and again since May 2007. Jóhanna is respected by fellow parliamentarians and popular among the general public.
Being the first openly gay prime minister sends a clear message to world and captures the dramatic changes taken place in Icelandic society over the last 30 years. In only thirty years attitudes towards gays and lesbians have been totally transformed which a progressive legislation clearly shows.
