Gay pride 2009

Once again Gay Pride weekend is coming to an end. After four days of fun some of us will probably need the coming up week to recover. Sleeping is simply not an option when Reykjavik Gay Pride is full on. Every seat was taken at the University Theater at the Opening Ceremony were handful of artist performed.

The mayor of Reykjavik, Mrs. Hanna Birna Kristjánsdóttir, signed a 3 year contract with Reykjavik Gay Pride but the city of Reykjavik has since the beginning of Gay Pride been one of the event’s most important sponsors.

Pride Awards handed out for the first time

For the first time Reykjavik Gay Pride committee rewarded some of its most loyal and important sponsors throughout the years . This year the ‘The pride’ (Stoltið) was given to  the city of Reykjavik, Vifilfell (Coca Cola Iceland), VIS Insurance Ltd, Ministry of Health, Landsbankinn and Restaurant Jómfrúin.

The Gay Pride weekend was packed with variety of events but as always the Saturday parade marked the highlight of the weekend. This year’s parade had the largest number of floaters strolling down Laugavegur, Reykjavik’s main shopping street and it is estimated over 70.000 people attended the huge outdoor party. Gay Pride 2009 may be over but we’re left with lots of great memories to treasure.
