pride2014-parade

Reykjavik Pride weekend has just finished and we´re still busy sorting out all the pictures taken during the weekend, soon to be posted on our website gallery. The event was a huge success with around 90.000 people showing up for the Pride Parade and outdoor concert at Arnarhóll in the city center. It´s hard to imagine that when the first parade took place in 1999 it would grow from a few people participating and around 1.500 people showing up for the event, to almost one fourth of the country coming to  the event, showing support to the LGBT community, friends and families. This year over 30 floats took part in the parade, most of them bringing joyful message to the public and a few reminding our fellow citizens that work is still to be done and we still need to keep our eyes open and fight prejudice.

One of the best moments during this year´s festival was Mrs. Johanna Sigurdardottir speach during the opening ceremony. Mrs. Sigurdardottir, who is Iceland´s  former Prime Minister and the World´s first openly gay head of state,  called for an action among world leaders to fight and end violence and discrimination taking place against LGBT people around the world. To do this, Mrs. Jóhanna suggested suggested the foundation of  "UN Queer" within the United Nations, an organization that could bring out changes for the better for LGBT people around the world.
