Q - Association of queer students is celebrating its 12 year anniversary this year. Q (first named FSS) was founded early year 1999 by group of people within the University of Iceland who felt the gay community was hardly visible within the university and something had to change. Raising the awareness of LGBT issues within the university, both among students and staff, was important as well as to provide some level of support for those LGBT students that might need it. Since 1999 a lot has changed, both within the University and in Icelandic society. Progressive steps have been taken since 1999 and over the years the level of acceptance has changed for the better. But Q´s role is still very important despite all the improvements we´re enjoying.
Q organises weekly meetings at the Queer Center and Q welcomes everyone who´s interested to join. The main purpose of those weekly meetings (every Friday 9 pm) is to create an "open venue for people to meet and socialize", that in itself is very important. January 21st Q will celebrate it´s 12 year anniversary at the Queer Center on Laugavegur 3, 4th floor. Visit Q website, www.queer.is, for more information.
