June 27th marks the 42 year anniversary of the Stonewall riots, an event frequently cited as the first instance in American history when people in the homosexual community fought back against a government-sponsored system that persecuted sexual minorities (Wikipedia).
June 27th is also an important day for the Icelandic gay and lesbian community when major legislative changes have been approved and important steps have been taken towards an gay equality. On June 27th 1996 the first legislative milestone was reached when the Icelandic Parliament (Althingi), passed a law recognizing the registered partnership between individuals of the same sex and on the same day in 2006 same sex couples were granted the same rights as heterosexual couples without any limitation. And in 2010 the Parliament in Iceland voted unanimously to approve same-sex marriage.
