Gay Pride weekend is over and this year was a marvelous success. It is estimated that some 100.000 people (1/3 of Iceland´s population) came to see the Saturday parade and the gay pride outdoor concert in Reykjavik´s city center. That makes it the biggest gay pride ever held in the world´s northernmost capital. The mayor of Reykjavik, Mr. Jón Gnarr did his part by dressing up and lead the colorful parade but the city of Reykjavik has been an active supporter of the event through the years.
Reykjavik Gay Pride has become one of the biggest events in Iceland. But it´s not only about the numbers, it´s also about showing support. "There are so many families coming for this event and kids everywhere with rainbow flags, this would never happen in my city" was something Gayiceoverheard in a conversation between an Icelander and his friend from abroad. It´s heartwarming to see so many people come to watch the event, local and from abroad, friends and families, all celebrating the diversity in our society and to embrace human rights for all.
