For our friends who don't have the freedom to celebrate gay pride

Once again Reykjavik Gay Pride weekend is over. This year´s pride was just as successful as the successful prides in the past if not more successful for the vibe and the message it brought. It was definitely more political in a way than I recall. Reykjavik´s mayor Mr. Jon Gnarr made a strong statement in the Saturday parade with his act when showing support to the Russian feminists Pussy Riot who have been behind bars for speaking up and speaking their mind in their home country.

Another memorable act was the empty truck with a written message on it: "For our friends who don't have the freedom to celebrate gay pride". And the US embassy joined the parade as well holding the rainbow flag while emphasizing "Gay rights are human rights" to quote Mrs. Hillary Clinton on gay rights and human rights. And one of the greatest moments during this year´s pride was to see the Human Rights Prize 2012 given to Anna Kristjánsdóttir, Iceland´s most significant fighter for transgender rights in Iceland.

Reykjavik Gay Pride 2012 is over but the message it brought will (hopefully) live a little bit longer. Let´s not forget there is a lot of people who "don't have the freedom to celebrate gay pride", speak their mind and love who they love. This pride was for all of them.
