The Canadian drama Heated Rivalry follows two of the world’s leading ice hockey players, Canadian star Shane Hollander and Russian rival Ilya Rozanov. They are fierce opponents on the ice, but behind closed doors their secret encounters gradually develop into a love story spanning several years.
The series is available on HBO Max in Iceland.
Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov first meet as highly promising young hockey players. They compete against one another for their national teams and later in the professional league, where the media promotes them as bitter rivals.
There is also a powerful mutual attraction between them. What begins as a secret sexual relationship develops over eight years into a complicated and profound love, although neither man finds it easy to acknowledge what the relationship truly means.
While pursuing championships, fame and successful careers, they must also contend with the fear that their secret will become public. In the world of professional sport, where image, masculinity, competition and the expectations of supporters carry enormous weight, the truth could affect both their private lives and their careers.
More Than a Sexual Relationship
Heated Rivalry initially attracted considerable attention for its explicit sex scenes, but the story soon develops into an emotional drama about secrecy, loneliness, identity and a love that cannot safely be made visible.
The series also explores how the same circumstances affect the two men differently. Shane attempts to control every aspect of his life and fears losing the career to which he has devoted himself. Ilya more often hides his insecurity behind confidence, humour and provocative behaviour.
Although Shane and Ilya remain at the centre of the story, the series also features another queer romance. Professional player Scott Hunter and Kip Grady must confront a similar question: whether a genuine relationship can survive when one partner is required to hide it from the world.
Based on Rachel Reid’s Books
The series is adapted from the queer sports romances of Canadian author Rachel Reid. Her six-book Game Changers series follows several couples within the same fictional professional hockey world.
The novel Heated Rivalry tells the story of Shane and Ilya, which continues in The Long Game. Scott and Kip, who also appear in the television adaptation, are the central couple in the first book, Game Changer.
The television series was created, written and directed by Jacob Tierney, whose previous work includes the Canadian comedies Letterkenny and Shoresy.

An Unexpected International Success
Heated Rivalry rapidly became one of the most widely discussed television programmes of the season. Interest in the series extended far beyond the established audience for queer television, while Hudson Williams and Connor Storrie became major stars within a remarkably short period.
Icelandic broadcaster RÚV examined the phenomenon in the article “People Are Literally Going Wild Over Heated Rivalry”.
The current-affairs programme Heimskviður also considered why the love story of two hockey players had achieved such extraordinary popularity: “Hockey and Queer Love Conquer the World: We Have Never Seen This Before”.

Second Season Confirmed
Canadian streaming service Crave has renewed Heated Rivalry for a second season, and HBO Max has secured the rights to show it across much of Europe. A premiere date for the new season has not yet been announced.
