Gayice.is was founded in 2003 as an English-language travel guide for LGBTQ+ visitors to Iceland. Since then, it has grown into a broader source of information about LGBTQ+ life, culture and history in Iceland.
The website offers practical information for visitors, news and cultural features, and an extensive archive of photographs and videos from Reykjavík Pride and other community events dating back to 2004.
In 2017, we launched Samkynhneigd.is, our Icelandic-language sister site. It covers Icelandic LGBTQ+ news, culture, history, rights, health, events and the people who contribute to the community.
In 2026, Gayice.is was rebuilt using the same platform and visual design as Samkynhneigd.is. The two websites now share a common structure and archive while continuing to serve different audiences in English and Icelandic. Selected content is translated and adapted between the sites, but each website also contains material of its own.
Gayice.is and Samkynhneigd.is are independent, self-funded projects maintained by volunteers.
