Spending Christmas and new years in Reykjavik is a wonderful experience and you´ll have no problem having fun. It´s good though to do some planning in advance as many restaurants and cafes are closed on the 24th and 25th. So in case you haven´t been invited by some friendly Icelanders to enjoy traditional Icelandic Christmas in their homes its good to check out in advance which restaurants are open during those two days. Most restaurants, cafes and bars open again on the 26th including queer cafe Trúnó and club Barbara. Check out www.visitreykjavik.is for opening hours during the holidays.
New Queers Eve - Where to party?
New years eve is most often spent at home with family and friends but around midnight things heat up (and loud) with fireworks being set off from every corner of the city to welcome the New Year. And soon after midnight when the fireworks are off many hit the bars and clubs downtown and party until early morning.
There are two Queer New Years Eve parties taking place in Reykjavik´s city center. Barbara and Truno´s "New Queers Eve"(Laugavegur 22) starts 1 after midnight with line up of queer dj´s and some surprises for those who show up early. Tickets are available at Truno (ISK 1.000) but if lucky you might be able to buy tickets at the door (ISK 2.500). The other New Years Eve queer event is on Hverfisgata 46 next to the men only club Strákaklúbburinn okkar (Hverfisgata 46). Entrance is free and house opens 00:30.
Wish you all Merry Christmas and a happy new year.
