The Prime Minister of Iceland, Mrs. Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir, and her wife, Jónína Leósdóttir, will be on an official visit to China on 15-18 April. Mrs. Sigurdardóttir captured the world´s attention after winning the 2009 elections in Iceland and becoming the world´s first openly gay prime minister. She was on Guardian´s top 10 list as the most influential LGBT people of the year in 2012 and her coming up visit with her wife to China is a milestone for LGBT in China and around the world.
According to Prime Minister´s Office The Prime Minister was invited by former Premier of China, Wen Jiabao, in his official visit to Iceland in April last year to sign a free trade agreement, which has been concluded between the countries after six years of negotiations.
This will be the second time Mrs. Sigurðardóttir goes on an official visit with her wife, the first one was to Faroa Island in 2010 which made the news when Jenis av Ran, chairman of Faroe Island´s Central Party refused to attend a formal dinner held in honour of Icelandic prime minister and her wife. Mrs. Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir will leave office after 4 years as Iceland´s Prime minister but she has been a member of Althingi (the Parliament) since 1978.
