Reykjavík Pride 2024 - a week full of events

Reykjavík Pride 2024 is upon us. The main event The Reykjavík Pride parade will be on Saturday 10^th, starting from Hallgrímskirkja church at 2 pm. winding it’s way down to Lækjargata where it continues to Hljómskálagarðurinn where a outdoor festival starts at 3 pm. with music and entertainment.

Reykjavík Pride runs from August 5^th till Sunday 11^th with numerous events every day, both official and off venue events. There will be a Rainbow Conference, concerts, drag, queer cruise, parties and more.

About Reykjavik Pride

Reykjavik Pride has been an annual event in Reykjavik since 1999 but the first Reykjavik Pride Parade took place in August 2000. However, its history goes back to 1993 when Icelandic gays and lesbians first gathered in the city center of Reykjavik, demanding freedom and human rights. The protest was repeated in 1994.

Our cozy little pride, originally visited by some fifteen hundred onlookers, has blossomed and evolved into almost a week-long, colorful celebration that attracts over 100 thousand guests from all over the world. Reykjavik Pride is, in fact, the biggest annual event in Iceland and has sometimes been called “the world’s biggest small Pride!”

This year’s theme, Beauty of Freedom, is a phrase that we have borrowed from Systur’s song; Með hækkandi sól. Systur is an Icelandic band, composed of sisters Sigga, Elín and Beta, who represented Iceland in the Eurovision Song Contest in Italy this year. The band has several ties to the queer community and chose to use their platform to highlight the challenges trans youth is facing, during the contest.
