Reykjavik Gay Pride

Reykjavik Gay Pride has become one of the biggest festivals in Iceland with almost one third of Icelanders showing up for the main event, the Saturday gay parade and outdoor concert. This year Reykjavik Gay Pride kicks off August 9th and for four days Reykjavik becomes the world´s "queerest" capital (as well as the world´s northernmost one).

Reykjavik Gay Pride is packed with events and fun things to do, concerts, exhibitions, tours and dancing.  Each year number of local and foreign artists perform during Gay Pride. The pride committe invites number of foreign artists to perform at the event and among visiting artists this year is the New York based pop-rock band Betty, best known for the L-Word theme songs which earned them international recognition.

The Gay Pride festivities in Reykjavík is a grass root organized. Since first held in 1999 the event has grown exponentially. The second year the event took place around 20.000 people showed up for the outdoor parade. Last year (2011) around 100.000 people showed up for the parade and outdoor concert, showing solidarity with the gay cause while having fun.
