Concert with Hörður Torfason

Hörður Torfa

Hörður Torfason throws his annual concert at the City Theater (Borgarleikhúsið), September 9th, while celebrating the 40 year anniversary his first album which was released 1970. Hörður is both well know for his music and as a human rights campaigner. In 1975 he came out to the public as a gay man in an infamous interview  which left the nation in a total shock. After the interview he found himself forced to leave the country returning a few years later. His contribution to the Icelandic gay rights movement is an important one influencing the foundation of Samtökin '78, The National Queer Association Iceland in 1978. Read more ...

BEARS ON ICE

For the 6th year BEARS ON ICE kicks off Thursday September 9. This four day event welcomes bears and friends and is a great opportunity to see a little bit of Iceland and have some fun with like-minded guys from around the world. Since the first event held in 2005 BEARS ON ICE has become an important part of Reykjavik´s gay scene while adding some flavour to the small but open gay scene. The mayor of Reykjavik, Mr. Jón Gnarr took everyone with surprise when showing up in drag during Gay Pride´s opening ceremony Thursday night marking the beginning of Reykjavik´s Gay Pride weekend. But this was not to be his first or last appearances during the weekend. Dressed up in drag Mr. Jón Gnarr lead the merry and colorful parade through the city center today, sending flowers and kisses to the crowd which earned him admiration and applause. The city of Reykjavik has been a great supporter of Reykjavik Gay Pride through the years and with the mayor himself participating is important for the event  and a great way to show support to the LGBT cause.

Happy Gay pride

Reykjavik Gay Pride weekend kicks off tonight, Thursday August 5th, with the Gay Pride opening ceremony in the Icelandic Opera starting 8 pm. Variety of events will take place during the pride weekend such as queer walking tours around Reykjavik city center, Queer Cruise from Reykjavik harbor and Saturday queer dances. The Saturday parade down Laugavegur and outdoor concert will of course mark the highlight of the event and is expected to attract thousand of people showing solidarity with the gay cause while celebrating live itself. The Gay Pride festivities in Reykjavík have been a marvellous success since 1999 and has become one of Iceland´s biggest outdoor event.   Read more ...

Iceland hosting the International Gay and Lesbian Aquatics championships in 2012

Styrmir to host

Iceland´s queer sport organization Styrmir is to host the International Gay and Lesbian Aquatics championships in 2012.  The event is expected to attract large crowd of athletes around the world and will be one of the biggest Aquatic sport event to be held in Iceland. According to Bjarni Sneabjorndsson, member of the local gay sport organization Styrmir, organizers are hoping to see some 1.000 athletes showing up for the event. Read more ...

Iceland Drag Contest coming up

Iceland's most entertaining competition, Iceland Drag Queen & Drag King, is coming up and will take place August 4th at the Icelandic Opera, the day before Reykjavik Gay Pride opens. Since first held some 11 years ago the competition has made a name for itself and is an important part of Reykjavik’s Queer Culture. Thursday, July 29th, Viggo & Víóletta will host the fourth and last cabaret evening of the summer at Barbara (Laugavegur 22). The other nights have been more than fantastic, extremely good humour and an amazing atmosphere have always been present on these nights. This time they will have an all new program from the deep well of the musical world. For example, they will perform songs from Lion King, Jesus Christ Superstar, Mary Poppins, Legally Blonde, Moulin Rouge, Cabaret and many many more.  Admission only ISK 1.000.-
